March has arrived, the days are getting brighter and we couldn’t be more excited to feel Spring in the air!
Most of us have spent a lot more time in our homes than usual as a result of lockdowns and restrictions over the last year and it’s no secret that getting outside in the fresh air and sunlight is important for our mental health. Now is the perfect time to get your garden ready for all those al fresco activities you’ve been dreaming about doing when the sun finally emerges.
We’re sharing some ideas to inspire you to make the most of your outdoor space for the sunny seasons ahead.
Get planning (and planting) for a colourful summer
Late Winter and early Spring can be a great time to plan your summer garden aesthetic and get preparation underway. After a long Winter of lockdown restrictions and the possibility of a Summer spent mostly at home, we can’t wait to add bright and beautiful colour into our gardens.
If you have children, finding new activities to give them some time away from screens during lockdown can be a challenge. Gardening can be a great family activity to get kids outdoors - from Sunflower growing competitions to letting them choose their very own flowers to plant, care for and show off when they bloom!
Make your garden a sanctuary
Consider creating a dedicated area that you can sit out in, soak up the sunlight and enjoy the relaxing benefits of spending time in your garden - whether that’s a morning coffee, al fresco dining or watching your garden come to life.
If you’re anticipating endless summer BBQs (restrictions permitting) and long evenings in the garden, give your space a little atmosphere and create a mood with outdoor lighting. Solar-powered lighting is a cost-effective way to brighten up your garden, or consider investing in a chimenea for light and warmth after the sun goes down.
Grow Your Own Herb Garden
Whether you have an abundance of outdoor space, a windowsill or are working from your kitchen, a herb garden is a great way to spend a little time with nature. With so many varieties available, you can choose to grow herbs for cooking, herbal teas, fragrance, herbal medicines, for beauty or purely to soothe your soul.
Or… Your Own Veggie Patch
Maybe you’ve already mastered the herb garden and are looking for a new challenge? Enter the Vegetable Patch! Some good beginner crops are courgettes, potatoes, beans, strawberries or beetroot. Spring will be the best time to begin planting, so choose your veggies and plan your menus now and you’ll be well prepared to (literally) enjoy the fruits of your labour when Summer comes around!
Give your garden a Spring Clean
From giving your old garden furniture a new lease of life, to mowing the lawn, cleaning the patio or fixing a broken fence. Now is the time to get all those little maintenance jobs out of the way so you can sit back, relax and enjoy your outdoor space when the sun starts to shine.
It’s important to have the right insurance in place to protect your house and your belongings, including your garden. Make sure you are covered under your Home or Contents Insurance.
