Five Unforgettable Motorbike Routes across Northern Ireland

For two-wheel enthusiasts, motorbikes aren’t a hobby, they’re a lifestyle. An open road and a stunning backdrop sets the stage for an unforgettable ride, and when it comes to scenery, no better place to be than Northern Ireland. If the summery weather has given you the urge to hit the road, consider one of these routes for your next motorbike adventure…

Antrim Coast Road (Carrickfergus to Cushendall)

How could we not start with one of the most beautiful coastal roads in the world, the Antrim Coast Road? Famously setting the scene for a ride in Sons of Anarchy, this route can feel like you’re on the edge of the world as you travel the 30 miles between Larne and Cushendall, to the very North of the country. Pitstops along the route include the notorious Ballygally Castle Hotel (with its haunted tower), the Cushendun Goat (yes, you read that correctly), and the picturesque town of Carnlough.

Causeway Coastal Route

Whether you are a tourist or a local, you will be familiar with our famous Giant’s Causeway. This route takes you from the iconic wonder of the world, travelling through the famous town of Portrush, across to seaside retreat Castlerock and finishing in the historical City of Derry~Londonderry. Expect a distance of approx. 50 miles, with plenty of ice-cream stops along the way.

Kilrea to Coleraine

An inland break from the coastal routes, this short countryside ride will see you start in the village of Kilrea, and travel north towards Coleraine. Passing fields of green grass, farms aplenty and the odd cow or two, this route is the type they write songs about. A modest 15 miles, this ride can easily be extended by continuing along the North Coast.

Stangford Lough (Newtownards – Strangford)

Keen to stay close to Belfast? Then take a quick scoot through Newtownards, Co. Down, and before you know it you’ll be sailing down the Portaferry Road, which runs parallel to the crystal-clear Strangford Lough. This 18-mile stretch passes across the majestic National Trust property at Mount Stewart, through the quaint town of Greyabbey, and finally finishes in Strangford, where a short ferry ride will continue your journey across the waters to Portaferry. From there, the world is your oyster.

Spelga Dam

For years, the less-travelled roads circling Spelga Dam have been a hidden gem for riders near and far. Nestled on the edge of the glorious Mourne Mountains, Co. Down, bikers can relish in serene solitude (most of the time), whilst enjoying the crisp mountain breeze. Expect hills, long stretches, and a distinct lack of pit-stops, but the views will be more than worth it.

Before you ride off into the sunset on one of these unforgettable routes, don’t forget that every great biker needs to be supported by great insurance. We work with our customers to find motorbike insurance to suit your type of bike, how many bikes you have, and how often you use them. Then, we find cost-effective deals which will work for you.
